Though I started having symptoms of GERD when I was a teenager. Anyway, I have a friend with a chronic candidia case (her whole life) and she discoved years ago that she cannot have sugar or sweetener in any form whatsoever; it feeds the yeast. If she eats sweets, drinks alcohol, and so on, she can tell a big difference. I don't think she has GERD, but she has some other chronic problems related to the candidiasis. She even makes her own ketchup and mayonaise and must read every label out there for the sugars in a product and such. Hope that helps. The best benefit for her is that the complete avoidance of simple sugars (and refined carbs) has kept her slim and trim her whole life!
