A yeast infection cannot turn into BV. There is a chemical imbalance that occurs when different types of bacteria that are normal in the vagina overgrow and outnumber the predominant bacterium, Lactobacillus. Instead of lactobacilli being the most numerous, bacteria such as Gardnerella vaginalis, and anaerobic bacteria like Bacteroides and Mobiluncus become predominant and cause symptoms.
certain factors have been identified as increasing the chances of developing BV. These include multiple or new sex partners, vaginal douching, and cigarette smoking. There is even a study that links vitamin D deficiency and the increased risks of BV. The role of sexual activity is still not really understood and BV can occur in women who have not had sexual intercourse.
